"You were the one who asked me about sex first," Lucy pointed out, blinking at him as she tried not to feel a tiny bit flustered by his question or the fact that now she was thinking about said dick. She gave her head a little shake to stop that dangerous line of thought but she also had to ask. "But did it fall off? I remember what happened to your finger..."
Maybe she shouldn't remind him about that, dang.
Yes, they should table that discussion and so she tried to focus on the information he was giving her as they walked along. Except she felt a wave of dizziness sweep over her when he told her his guess that her Dad had probably been locked in a freezer while bombs were going off and people were dying. The look on her face answered his question about if she had ever seen the vault her Dad had grown up in.
Because it was one thing to know that her Dad had been the one to burn Shady Sands to the ground but to know he had been involved with the bombs being dropped? Horror swept through her as she looked around slowly, seeing the hellish landscape that stretched out all around them like a haunting memory she didn't want to have. When her stomach rolled, she didn't think it had anything to do with radiation.
He almost defended himself there, and pointed out that he'd only mentioned she was making some noises and she'd run with it from there, but that seemed...pretty fuckin' immature, so he didn't. "You plannin' on biting that off too?" he shot back instead, because that was so much more mature. He walked for several more paces before he realized she'd slowed to a stop, and he looked over his shoulder at her. Shit. This was why he'd suggested she wait til they were stopped for the night.
On a barely audible sigh, he turned on his heel and waited patiently for her to process the revelation. He supposed some might offer platitudes, say something like, That doesn't mean he doesn't love you, but as he'd already told her: he was an honest monster.
"I wasn't going to...," Lucy stammered, surprisingly flustered again but only because his question about her biting off his dick brought up images of her having his dick in his mouth. She imagined it for a moment too, wondering what it would even look like or taste like. In her mind, he took the place of old memories.
Except she couldn't linger on it for long as she stared unseeing, trying to breathe slowly while being aware of the fact that he was standing there watching her. "You talked to him, and said that he had asked you for your autograph."
Her lips parted and pressed together as she worked through that before slowly turning a wide-eyed gaze to him. "Who are you?"
The Ghoul tilted his head at her and held that wide-eyed gaze for a stretch of poignant silence, then stepped closer, uncomfortably close. "I told you, sweetheart," he drawled, low and with a hint of threat, or maybe just warning. "I'm you. Just add a couple hundred years. You ain't askin' who I am though, are ya. You're askin' who I was. And you ain't got a right to that 'til I say you do. We clear?"
Lucy didn't back down, she merely lifted her chin to meet his gaze, holding it with a strange steadiness despite the shaky situation she found herself in. She reminded herself that he didn't owe her anything and that not even a bit of joking back and forth, or his giving her his jacket at night, meant anything.
"Okey dokey," she replied, seeming to agree even though there was a flash of defiance in her gaze that made it clear she wanted to argue but she was choosing not to.
"Good." He stared her down for a moment or two longer than was entirely necessary before turning on his heel and walking away with the distinctive clink of spurs and creaks of leather. She already knew a lot more about him than he would've liked; she'd heard him say aloud his goal, his only real goal in 200 years of Wastelanding. The bounties, the drugs, the dragging himself along to survive year after wretched fuckin' year had been to find his family. Just thinking it made him feel raw. She was a grain of sand dug into under his skin, an itchy little irritant poking and prodding and trying to dig in deeper.
...So why the fuck hadn't he shaken her off? Why'd he give a shit if she spent the night shivering? Why the fuck was he trying so hard to keep her alive?
Lucy's pulse fluttered but she continued to hold his gaze to the point that she felt almost too aware of him but then he gave her relief by turning and stalking away. Her brows lifted as she watched him for a second, her gaze sweeping over him in a couple of passes before she looked down at Dogmeat who was staring up at her expectantly. "Well, let's go."
It wasn't all that hard to tell that he was irritated with her, so she kept the conversation to a minimum with him. She focused all of her talking to the dog instead whenever Dogmeat would trail back to walk with her. Or at night when the dog would curl up beside her to keep her company while she slept near the brooding Ghoul.
The next day, they traveled further and Lucy was starting to wonder if there was an end to the hellish landscape. She was sure that the Ghoul would say they were still moving too slow but, surprisingly, he didn't bitch at her too much about it. He grumbled occasionally, usually when she tripped or got distracted by something. Or whenever he thought she was doing something she shouldn't be doing.
By the next night though, he seemed to be more relaxed, maybe finally getting over the tension of their talk that first day. She wasn't foolish enough to think that she should broach the topic of his past though. She was letting sleeping dogs lie for the moment as she sat next to him and frowned while finishing one of the cactus fruits. She was already shivering a little from the chill of the night and she hadn't even gone to sleep yet. Finally, it was her turn to grumble. "How can it be so flipping hot during the day and cold at night? It doesn't make sense."
"Ain't nothin' to hold the heat," the Ghoul explained as he stared at the smouldering embers of the campfire--a random little factoid picked up from his acting, and parenting days. Janey'd asked the same kinds of questions about moments in his movies. "No water in the air, not enough vegetation, just rocks an' sand. Soon as the sun goes down, the hot goes with it." He glanced over at Dogmeat, happy tearing into the remains of a gecko she'd chased down and killed all on her own, her muzzle streaked with blood and sinew.
Not the best bedroll mate at the moment, then. On a sigh, he looked at Lucy and jerked his head, indicating she should move closer. "C'mere."
What he was saying made sense but she still looked a touch put out by the news that there was no relief from the cold. "Is the whole world like this? There's nowhere else in the world that isn't desert?"
She was eyeing Dogmeat, wondering how to clean her muzzle when the Ghoul jerked his head and drew her attention to him while telling her to...move closer? She blinked but then she did what he wanted, shifting closer to his side almost hesitantly since she wasn't entirely sure what he was up to.
The Ghoul snorted softly and shook his head. "Ain't all desert all over the place, no. But they don't call it the Wasteland for kicks and tickles, sweetheart."
The hesitation was entirely justified, but he still rolled his eyes a little. "You wanna keep warm or you wanna keep feelin' like your toes are gonna freeze and break off?" They wouldn't, but it'd feel like they could. He patted the space right next to him and raised an eyebrow--well. An eyebrow ridge, since there was no hair to speak of and hadn't been for a long time. "Survival 101, Vaultie. Sharin' warmth."
"What are the other places like?" Lucy asked curiously as though he had all the answers in the world for her. But it made sense to her since he had clearly seen more of this world than she had considering she had lived only in the Vaults until now.
She considered him for a second or two longer before she shifted the rest of the way to tuck herself against his side. Then his heat was sweeping over her, chasing away the chill as she let out a little noise of pleasure and immediately burrowed in tighter without thinking about it.
"Ain't seen everywhere. Heard some things." He made a quiet sound of amusement as she shuddered and whined with relief and pressed against his side. He hesitated for a moment, then lifted his arm so she could tuck in closer, and he could lay his arm over her. "They say out east, in the Commonwealth, lots of the vegetation's taken over where the townships used to be. Course they also got rad storms. Pouring radioactive rain, thunder, lightning--like the wrath o'God comin' down."
She didn't expect him to wrap an arm around her but she didn't deny that it felt nice, even companionable. She figured it made sense for the heat that seemed to be spreading through her as she tucked her head against his shoulder, her eyes drifting closed as she smiled with interest at what he was describing he had heard. "Surely no one can live there?"
The Ghoul scoffed softly and leaned his head back, letting his hat tip down to partially obscure his face. Weeks ago that naivete would've pissed him off. He could roll with it a little better now. "Course they do. Folk always find a way. Ain't sayin' it's easy. Ain't easy nowhere. But folk find a way."
If he didn't want to answer questions, then he should probably stop being so open to answering her questions especially since he didn't grumble at her so much anymore. Fighting back a small yawn, she tucked her head down as a sleepy shudder rolled through her body instead. "Do you think it would be nicer to live there? If you could learn to deal with the storms?"
Her yawn triggered one of his own, which made his arm tighten around her for a moment. "Never thought about it much," he admitted, his unburdened shoulder lifting and dropping in a shrug. "Rad storms wouldn't bother me none." You couldn't really poison an already irradiated creature with more rads. "Reckon the world's about the same for my kind wherever."
Somehow the arm tightening around her drew her closer as she shifted one hand to his side, curling lightly just above his hip bone as she could feel herself starting to drift off. For some reason, his words stirred a soft huff of laughter. "I think I would like to live somewhere green where it isn't sand as far as the eye can see."
This time a yawn escaped her on the tail of a soft little intake of breath. Breaths that started to even out as her body relaxed further against his, no longer rocked by little shivers of her body trying to ignore the cold.
He'd have liked that once, too. Getting out of the city, going back to his roots, farming, raising cattle, riding horses...all of those dreams were shattered now. Unachievable.
"Yeah," was all he said out loud, drifting more than a bit himself. He didn't mean to, cause really, one of them should stay awake. He was vaguely aware of Dogmeat trotting over to curl up against his other side, nosing her way insistently under his free arm. Then he drifted further and deeper, and fell into a surprisingly peaceful sleep.
She would have liked those dreams as well, if only because it was more than being in the Vault. She had some of the skills, she knew how to farm but she would have liked learning about the rest.
She made a noncommital noise as she drifted off into a peaceful sleep, probably the first she'd really had since coming up to the surface. At some point, they had shifted down instead of leaning against the wall. At least, that was how it seemed to happen as she found it easy to wrap herself around him like she was trying to hold onto the heat of his body. She also slept for longer than she should have...
The Ghoul woke to the press of a cold wet nose on his forehead and some foul dog breath ghosting across his face. It was the first time since shortly after the bombs dropped that he woke up not entirely sure where, or when, he was. There was a split second, just a fraction of a moment, where he was in bed at home, Roosevelt was snuffling at him for breakfast and Barb was half draped over him, exhaling soft warm breaths over his skin.
But it didn't last long, and it was hard to say if that was a kindness or not. He grunted softly and batted sleepily at Dogmeat, started to sit up but realized the Vaultie had him wrapped up like a snake, her arm and leg thrown over him her head a dead weight on his chest. Wouldn't be a big deal if trying to shift her off didn't have her leg flexing and pressing against his groin, threatening to turn morning wood into genuine arousal.
"Vaultie." He grasped her arm and tried to shake her a little. "Wake up."
But Lucy didn't want to wake up, not when she was so comfortably warm and still locked in the best sleep she'd had in a long time. So it was only natural for her to make a sleepy noise of complaint when something nudged her, trying to urge her awake. She only wrapped herself tighter around the source of warmth, shifting her leg higher as she turned her head slightly to hide it from the light or whatever it was that was disturbing her.
With a hiss, the Ghoul grabbed her thigh and shook her again, this time with even more urgency. "Vaultie," he growled a little more sharply. "Come on, now. We're wastin' daylight." Yes that was definitely the problem, not her lithe little body plastered against his and her leg grinding on his dick. He shot Dogmeat a look as she tilted her head at him, like she was confused everyone wasn't up yet. "Make yourself useful," he grumbled at her, "an' go lick her damn face. Fuck's sake--Vaultie!"
This tine his frantic call seemed to startle Lucy awake with a soft gasp as her eyes flew open and she pulled back, trying to make herself awake and alert again. For a second or two, she thought they were being attacked and she scrambled for her gun as she looked around. โWhat?! What is it?โ
She started to sit up until she realized that she was pretty much draped across him. Then the color flooded her cheeks as she scrambled back a bit to put space between them. โOh, Iโm sorry!โ
He heaved a sigh as she scrambled for her gun and merely waited while she regained her equilibrium. "Yeah, yeah," he grunted, reaching behind him for his hat and pushing himself up into a sitting position. "Get your stuff, we're wasting time." He winced a bit as he got to his feet, feeling stiff in more ways than one, what with having a visible hard-on. He shuffled off to get out of sight to take a piss, with Dogmeat following him because she'd apparently decided he was New Dad, leaving Lucy to pick up the camp.
Lucy felt her cheeks warm further as she immediately dragged her gaze down when the Ghoul stood up and she saw a rather visible hard-on causing a tent in his pants while he shuffled away in a hurry. She felt her mouth go dry and then strangely wet which stunned her a bit as she sat there for a moment, trying to gather her wits together. She told herself that it was because she was still a bit staggered from being woken up so abruptly and that it had nothing to do with the fact that she had been wrapped around him. Or that it had been pleasant until the rude awakening.
She was still thinking about it as she got hurriedly to her feet to pick up the camp. She managed to calm her racing heart as her logical side took over, reasoning carefully as to why he would have an erection. By the time he came back, she was sure of what she wanted to say and she waited with a quietly expectant look on her face.
Maybe he knew it was coming too when he made his way back to her but she stayed silent for a few more minutes until they started walking. Then she finally found her voice, glancing at him. "I just wanted to apologize again for...getting a little too close while we were sleeping. You were rather pleasantly warm and a nice buffer to the cold during the night. But I also wanted to reassure you that I was not embarrassed by the sight of your, ah, morning situation and you shouldn't be embarrassed either. I know that it's quite normal for the average man to wake up with an erection in the morning and there are plenty of times that it has nothing to do with a feeling of arousal..."
