Somehow the arm tightening around her drew her closer as she shifted one hand to his side, curling lightly just above his hip bone as she could feel herself starting to drift off. For some reason, his words stirred a soft huff of laughter. "I think I would like to live somewhere green where it isn't sand as far as the eye can see."

This time a yawn escaped her on the tail of a soft little intake of breath. Breaths that started to even out as her body relaxed further against his, no longer rocked by little shivers of her body trying to ignore the cold.

He'd have liked that once, too. Getting out of the city, going back to his roots, farming, raising cattle, riding horses...all of those dreams were shattered now. Unachievable.

"Yeah," was all he said out loud, drifting more than a bit himself. He didn't mean to, cause really, one of them should stay awake. He was vaguely aware of Dogmeat trotting over to curl up against his other side, nosing her way insistently under his free arm. Then he drifted further and deeper, and fell into a surprisingly peaceful sleep.

She would have liked those dreams as well, if only because it was more than being in the Vault. She had some of the skills, she knew how to farm but she would have liked learning about the rest.

She made a noncommital noise as she drifted off into a peaceful sleep, probably the first she'd really had since coming up to the surface. At some point, they had shifted down instead of leaning against the wall. At least, that was how it seemed to happen as she found it easy to wrap herself around him like she was trying to hold onto the heat of his body. She also slept for longer than she should have...

The Ghoul woke to the press of a cold wet nose on his forehead and some foul dog breath ghosting across his face. It was the first time since shortly after the bombs dropped that he woke up not entirely sure where, or when, he was. There was a split second, just a fraction of a moment, where he was in bed at home, Roosevelt was snuffling at him for breakfast and Barb was half draped over him, exhaling soft warm breaths over his skin.

But it didn't last long, and it was hard to say if that was a kindness or not. He grunted softly and batted sleepily at Dogmeat, started to sit up but realized the Vaultie had him wrapped up like a snake, her arm and leg thrown over him her head a dead weight on his chest. Wouldn't be a big deal if trying to shift her off didn't have her leg flexing and pressing against his groin, threatening to turn morning wood into genuine arousal.

"Vaultie." He grasped her arm and tried to shake her a little. "Wake up."

Vaultie. Wake up.

But Lucy didn't want to wake up, not when she was so comfortably warm and still locked in the best sleep she'd had in a long time. So it was only natural for her to make a sleepy noise of complaint when something nudged her, trying to urge her awake. She only wrapped herself tighter around the source of warmth, shifting her leg higher as she turned her head slightly to hide it from the light or whatever it was that was disturbing her.

Nope, she wasn't waking up, thank you very much.

With a hiss, the Ghoul grabbed her thigh and shook her again, this time with even more urgency. "Vaultie," he growled a little more sharply. "Come on, now. We're wastin' daylight." Yes that was definitely the problem, not her lithe little body plastered against his and her leg grinding on his dick. He shot Dogmeat a look as she tilted her head at him, like she was confused everyone wasn't up yet. "Make yourself useful," he grumbled at her, "an' go lick her damn face. Fuck's sake--Vaultie!"

This tine his frantic call seemed to startle Lucy awake with a soft gasp as her eyes flew open and she pulled back, trying to make herself awake and alert again. For a second or two, she thought they were being attacked and she scrambled for her gun as she looked around. “What?! What is it?”

She started to sit up until she realized that she was pretty much draped across him. Then the color flooded her cheeks as she scrambled back a bit to put space between them. “Oh, I’m sorry!”

He heaved a sigh as she scrambled for her gun and merely waited while she regained her equilibrium. "Yeah, yeah," he grunted, reaching behind him for his hat and pushing himself up into a sitting position. "Get your stuff, we're wasting time." He winced a bit as he got to his feet, feeling stiff in more ways than one, what with having a visible hard-on. He shuffled off to get out of sight to take a piss, with Dogmeat following him because she'd apparently decided he was New Dad, leaving Lucy to pick up the camp.

Lucy felt her cheeks warm further as she immediately dragged her gaze down when the Ghoul stood up and she saw a rather visible hard-on causing a tent in his pants while he shuffled away in a hurry. She felt her mouth go dry and then strangely wet which stunned her a bit as she sat there for a moment, trying to gather her wits together. She told herself that it was because she was still a bit staggered from being woken up so abruptly and that it had nothing to do with the fact that she had been wrapped around him. Or that it had been pleasant until the rude awakening.

She was still thinking about it as she got hurriedly to her feet to pick up the camp. She managed to calm her racing heart as her logical side took over, reasoning carefully as to why he would have an erection. By the time he came back, she was sure of what she wanted to say and she waited with a quietly expectant look on her face.

Maybe he knew it was coming too when he made his way back to her but she stayed silent for a few more minutes until they started walking. Then she finally found her voice, glancing at him. "I just wanted to apologize again for...getting a little too close while we were sleeping. You were rather pleasantly warm and a nice buffer to the cold during the night. But I also wanted to reassure you that I was not embarrassed by the sight of your, ah, morning situation and you shouldn't be embarrassed either. I know that it's quite normal for the average man to wake up with an erection in the morning and there are plenty of times that it has nothing to do with a feeling of arousal..."

The Ghoul was starting to wonder if he was ever gonna have the full measure of the Vaultie. Almost every goddamn word out of her mouth was unexpected. He tipped his head at her in a manner she was probably well used to by now, a hint of amusement on the weathered ruin of his face.

He waited until she was done tripping over herself to excuse his blatant bonor, then whistled softly, like he was impressed. "Well now, ain't that something. They really got everything in them, even comprehensive sex education. I look a drop embarrassed to you, Vaultie?" He did not. He most certainly did not, and was not, the least bit bashful. Casually as you please, he brushed past her to pick up his saddlebag and settle it on his shoulder, sent her another amused glance as he started to stroll back onto the path. "You don't want a man's dick to get hard, sweetheart, don't go humpin' him in his sleep."

It was a mutual feeling because she wasn't sure she would ever have the full measure of the Ghoul as well. He didn't look embarrassed as she talked to him, trying to ease his mind for what seemed to be no reason at all.

"Well, no, now that you say that, I don't think you're embarrassed," she sighed because she had miscalculated once again. At least she hadn't tried to shoot him with an ineffective dart this time, right? But then he was brushing past her while making a comment about her humping him and she felt her cheeks go red again.

She must have looked like a fish as she gaped after him, blinking and opening her mouth before closing it again. Then she cleared her throat, following. "I wasn't humping you. While I might be somewhat curious as to what a sexual experience with you might be like, I can reassure you that I was only hugging you to stay warm and that I wasn't entirely aware of my actions!"

It had been a joke, mostly, a little needling to put her back up, just cause it was fun. But yet another completely unexpected thing came tumbling out of her mouth. His steps slowed, then halted, and he stayed standing with his back to her for a few moments, giving her ample time to walk it back if she wanted to, before finally turning in his heel and staring at her with that same curious expression. Sizing her up yet again with a brand new yardstick, cause she kept changing the field of play.

"...huh," he finally grunted quietly after a lengthy silence, then turned around and kept walking.

Well, that was a loaded response and Lucy didn't know what to make of it but she decided that maybe it was best not to ask him to expand on that.

Instead, she preferred to mentally kick herself as she followed after him again, shaking her head slowly to herself as she wondered how it was that she kept sticking her foot in her mouth. Or what it that he merely looked at her with a 'huh' when she said more than she should have said.

She couldn't resist stealing the odd peek at him as they continued walking.

Loaded indeed. He hadn't decided what he thought about it all himself. He didn't think for a second she was actually attracted to him, cause, fuckin' look at him. Best to take it at face value: she was curious.

And horny. One of the horniest he'd ever met. And that was saying something, he'd lived in Hollywood for fuck's sake.

By midday they came upon a trading post. Out of habit, the Ghoul tilted his hat down, obscuring the fact that his nose was missing. He couldn't completely hide the fact that he was a ghoul, but he could make it less obvious. Helped a little that he was walking side by side with a smoothie. Speaking of which...

"C'mon, Vaultie, let's find you some clothes."

Eventually, Lucy had started to talk again but it was a fairly mundane conversation considering all the different topics they had covered in the last few days. Or, you know, her humping him in his sleep. Apparently.

She perked up when the trading post came into view because she was always curious about things on the surface and the people she could meet. A sideways glance had her catching the way he drew his hat down and she arched a brow curiously before she realized that he was doing it to cover some of his face.

"I can go in alone if you want?" She offered, just in case he didn't want to go in and deal with people.

He scoffed softly and angled his head to send a look at her from beneath the tipped brim of his hat. "So you can get fleeced by some forked tongued swindler? Naw, don't think that's gon' work, Vaultie. Saw what passed for your negotiation tactics live an' up close." To quote Ma June, fuckin' Vault Dwellers. "You can take point, but I'm gon' stick close enough to make sure ain't nobody tryin' to rob you blind."

What a complete one-eighty from using her as bait and then selling her. Now he seemed almost…protective.

Her features softened briefly as she smiled at him but she caught herself with a little cough as she glanced at the trading post. Pursing her lips, she considered his words before making a decision. “Why don’t you take the lead this time and I’ll watch you? Then I can learn how I should interact with people up here.”

Protective of their resources. That was his story. He was stickin' to it.

He sent her an amused glance, shook his head slightly as he ambled up the rickety wooden steps of the small ramshackle building, passing brahmin and carts parked outside. The way she talked was just so goddamn weird. Nothing like a Wastelander, nothing like the world that existed bedore the bombs drop.

The interior was packed with salvage, but it didn't take more than a quick glance to identify an old bookshelf and repurposed to hold a messy piles of haphazardly folded clothing. The man behind the counter didn't even look up from a Grognak the Barbarian comic he was engrossed in, though a few fellow travellers sent the two of them confused and concerned looks as they passed.

"There ya go," he drawled, leaning against the wall near the shelf. "See what you can find."

They could both spin it however they wanted.

Lucy was aware of the guy behind the counter looking at her curiously because of the bright blue suit but that the main reason they were there. It would feel strange to be without it since it was almost like a second layer of skin to her but she also recognized that she didn’t want to be in it anymore. Partially because it made her stand out but also because she didn’t want to be associated with what it stood for anymore.

She started poking through the clothes until she found a couple of pieces. Then she looked up curiously. “Is there somewhere I can change?”

The guy pointed out a space in the back and she nodded before glancing over at The Ghoul, checking him for a moment where he was standing before she slipped into the back. She hadn’t found a jacket and a hat yet but she had found a couple tops and a pair of pants. Clothes that felt weird when she peeled off her vault suit and changed.

When she emerged a few moments later, probably just long enough to make the Ghoul itchy, she looked hesitant but hopeful as she found the Ghoul. She held up her arms like she was asking what he thought as she turned slowly. She had changed the vault suit for a pair of slim fitting dark brown pants and a short white top underneath a fitted almost vest like top. It showed a little more skin than she was used to but she was going to look for a jacket.

Turning to face the Ghoul, she arched a brow and smiled. “Well, do I look like I could fit in now?”

The Ghoul dug out a cigarette and an old scruffed lighter out of his coat, and was smoking it with his hat tipped down while she changed. She took long enough that the proprietor was starting to look up from his comic and squint at him. He didn't have to be looking at him to see it, he could feel the suspicion.

He exhaled a plume of grey smoke as the Vaultie finally ducked out of the alcove and did a little spin. Weren't as perfect a fit as her blue jumpsuit, but even that helped her fit in. He took another drag, the orange glow illuminating his face as he studied her, his expression hard to read. "Yep, think that'll do," he replied, dropping his cigarette and stubbing it out with his boot. "Find a hat. Your nose is turning redder by the day."

Lucy figured that agreement was as good as any she was going to get and so she flashed a smile before she turned to start looking through the rest of the things. Eventually she came up with a simple hat the same shade as her pants and a jacket. Not one as long as his but it hung past the curve of her backside and it looked like it was good enough to protect her from the elements.

Once she had them in hand, she moved over to him with a curious look on her face. “What now?”

In other words, how was she going to pay?

While she hunted up a hat and a coat, the Ghoul took her pack and rooted through it until he came up with a box of snack cakes. Barely waiting for her to acknowledge she was done, he ambled up to the counter and slid the box across to the shopkeep. "For the clothes," he drawled, carelessly shoving her vault suit into the pack before handing it back to her.

The owner blinked, and seemed like he was about to protest before he got a good look at the box. "Hey are those pre-w--"

"Shut the fuck up," the Ghoul interrupted smoothly, staring the shopkeep down until the cap dropped in his head. The last thing they needed was other folk overhearing pre-war food.

"...yeah, okay," the guy responded, taking the box and whisking it off the counter, stashing it somewhere out of sight and picking up his comic again.

"Dandy. Lesgo, darlin'." The Ghoul strolled out of the creaky building, unhurried but with purpose. Best to move on and get gone before anyone looked too hard or too long.

“Okay,” Lucy nodded at The Ghoul as she tugged her new jacket on, noting it was a size or two too big for her but maybe she would appreciate that at night when she could use it for a blanket. Then she wouldn’t need to cuddle up to The Ghoul for heat even though he would be warmer than her jacket. She also wasn’t going to look too closely at the fact that she felt a flicker of disappointment at only using her jacket at night.

Brushing those thoughts from her mind, she turned to look at the man with a bright smile. “Thank you for your help and the clothes.”

Then she turned to hurry after The Ghoul as the guy blinked at her.

The Ghoul whistled for Dogmeat, who was sniffing curiously around the placid brahmin, as he led the way back to the highway. He didn't try to talk until the trading post was well behind them, and he was sure they weren't being followed.

"So how's it feel, Vaultie?" He glanced at her as he took his canteen out for a sip of water. He hummed as he drank, then passed her the canteen. "Hm. Guess I gotta stop callin' you that now."

She had noticed that he glanced around enough that she felt the need to do the same, checking their surroundings to make sure that it was just them as they walked away to continue on their trek in the same direction her father had gone.

“It feels weird,” she told him truthfully as she glanced down at herself. “But it’s strangely…freeing. Comfortable.”

Then she looked at him, considering. “You don’t have to.”
